2026 NWAFAA Fall Training Program

Join the Northwest Automatic Fire Alarm Association (NWAFAA) for three full days of practical, instructor-led training focused on fire alarm systems, inspection, testing, maintenance, construction fire protection, codes, standards, and project management.

Designed for contractors, AHJs, inspectors, engineers, technicians, project managers, and fire protection professionals, this training program provides real-world application of Oregon-adopted fire and life safety codes and standards.

Each training day is registered separately, allowing attendees to select the courses most relevant to their professional role and interests.

Day 1 - November 3, 2026

NFPA 72 Chapter 14 — Inspection, Testing & Maintenance 101

A practical, code-based course covering inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements aligned with the Oregon-adopted edition of NFPA 72.

Topics include:

  • Scope and applicability of NFPA 72 Chapter 14
  • Roles and responsibilities of the testing authority
  • Required documentation, records, and reporting
  • Testing frequencies and component-level procedures
  • Common deficiencies and corrective actions
  • Oregon-specific considerations and AHJ coordination

Construction Fire Protection — Codes, Standards & Plan Review

An overview of fire protection requirements during construction aligned with Oregon-adopted OFC/IFC requirements and applicable NFPA standards.

  • Temporary fire protection requirements
  • Plan submittal requirements and deficiencies
  • Contractor, AHJ, and design coordination

Joseph Cervantes

Joseph Cervantes is a nationally recognized authority on fire alarm and life safety codes, with nearly 30 years of experience spanning system design, construction fire safety, emergency communications, inspections, testing, and standards development. His work focuses on translating complex code language into defensible, real-world execution for agencies, engineers, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction.

Joseph is an active contributor to multiple NFPA and ICC technical committees and working groups, including long-term involvement with NFPA 72 and construction fire safety provisions. He has participated in the last several code cycles and regularly advises on code intent, enforcement alignment, and risk-based compliance strategies. His experience includes large-scale commercial projects, renovations, high-risk construction environments, and post-incident investigations.

As the founder of Cervantes Consulting LLC, Joseph provides executive-level advisory services, technical training, and expert guidance focused on compliance integrity, liability reduction, and defensible decision-making. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and training events, known for delivering practical insight that bridges the gap between written code and field reality.

At Northwest AFAA, Joseph will present on NFPA 72, Chapter 14, offering a focused, technical examination of inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements, common misapplications, evolving expectations, and how Chapter 14 is increasingly relied upon for enforcement, system performance validation, and legal defensibility.
