The 2026 NEC underwent major structural and organizational changes in Chapters 7 and 8 to prepare for the 2029 edition. This presentation will address how to navigate the 2026 structure and changes across the NEC relevant to the low-voltage industry.

  • This session will outline the standard rating system, applicable testing protocols, and specific installation requirements for electrical enclosures based on the environmental conditions expected for both indoor and outdoor applications and in both classified and unclassified locations. Detailed requirements from NFPA 70, NEMA EN 10250, UL 50, and UL 50E will be highlighted.

Joseph Cervantes is a nationally recognized authority on fire alarm and life safety codes, with nearly 30 years of experience spanning system design, construction fire safety, emergency communications, inspections, testing, and standards development. His work focuses on translating complex code language into defensible, real-world execution for agencies, engineers, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction.

Joseph is an active contributor to multiple NFPA and ICC technical committees and working groups, including long-term involvement with NFPA 72 and construction fire safety provisions. He has participated in the last several code cycles and regularly advises on code intent, enforcement alignment, and risk-based compliance strategies. His experience includes large-scale commercial projects, renovations, high-risk construction environments, and post-incident investigations.

As the founder of Cervantes Consulting LLC, Joseph provides executive-level advisory services, technical training, and expert guidance focused on compliance integrity, liability reduction, and defensible decision-making. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and training events, known for delivering practical insight that bridges the gap between written code and field reality.


















Kyle Lazzaro is a Lead Consultant at Jensen Hughes with over 15 years of industry experience in chemical engineering and fire safety. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and a Master's degree in Materials Engineering from North Carolina State University.

As a technical problem-solver with a strong interest in materials science, programming, and electrical circuit design, Kyle brings a unique blend of skills to his work in fire and life safety consulting. He specializes in chemical and fire safety programs for private businesses, educational campuses, industrial clients, and research and development laboratories.

Kyle's expertise spans various areas, including Hazardous Materials Information Systems (HMIS), Hazardous Materials Management Plans (HMMP), process safety, electrical safety, and general code and fire protection provisions. His advanced knowledge of clean room protocols makes him particularly valuable in high-tech and pharmaceutical environments.

Currently based in Beaverton, Oregon, Kyle works in the Fire & Building Safety department at Jensen Hughes, focusing on Fire Life Safety Consulting, Hazard Analysis & Mitigation, and Special Fire Detection Systems. His skills include chemical classification and quantity analysis, gas detection, and the use of specialized software like HazAdvisr.

Kyle's diverse background, which includes experience as a Process Development Engineer at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and a Research Engineer at OFS, allows him to bring a comprehensive perspective to complex fire and life safety challenges.



John McCamish has over 35 years of experience in the electrical industry. After graduating from the University of Oregon, he entered the electrical industry as an apprentice, journeyman and foreman for a large electrical contractor.

After working in the field, Mr. McCamish designed curriculum and taught apprentice and journey level electricians locally and nationally. He served his local community on electrical and fire code boards of appeals and at the state level Mr. McCamish served on code committees for overseeing adoption and exams for electrical licensing.

He is the author of “Codeology, Navigating the 2023 NEC” and editor of other electrical code related textbooks.

At the national level Mr. McCamish has served on Code Making Panel 2 for the NEC and the Fundamentals Committee for the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. He currently is a principal member on CMP-17. He holds an Oregon Supervising Electrician License and a Texas Master Electrician License.


Bryan Holland is the Managing Director of the Technical Field Representatives Program at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). He currently holds forty-one ICC certifications including Master Code Professional, Electrical Code Specialist, and Energy Code Specialist. He also holds twenty-six FEMA certifications and is a Certified Standards Professional (SES-CSP) by the Society for Standardization Professionals. Bryan represents NEMA as a voting principal on several NPFA, ICC, and IEC technical committees. He lives in the state of Florida and is a licensed Building Code Administrator, Plans Examiner, and Inspector. Bryan is a member of the AFAA, ECF, IAEI, ICC, NFPA and SES.





 

The NWAFAA is an Affiliate Association Partner of the Automatic Fire Alarm Association serving the Pacific Northwest. This organization brings together Engineers, AHJ's, Vendors, Installers, Manufacturers and End Users in the fire alarm industry to further the industry.
